Written by Christine Bishop, Schwalm embroidery is a named after a region along the Schwalm river in Germany. Schwalm is a beautiful and delicate form of late-18th to 19th century whitework embroidery which incorporates surface stitches, pulled fabric, drawn thread, needle lace and needleweaving. It was traditionally embroidered on blouses, shirts, stockings, pillowcases, top sheets and towels. Traditional design elements are based on the "tree of life" and include hearts, tulips, the sun, pine cones, flowers, fruits, leaves, tendrils and the pigeon or dove. The book contains 12 pages of full color photographs and step by step drawings to clarify the instructions. Written in 1999, there are 112 pages. The book is unused and is in excellent condition.
